An old timer joked to me about how he and others drank from a flask hidden under his coat at cold outdoor football games in the old Memorial stadium.  Of course there was no drinking allowed in the stadium on campus, so I guess he must have been confused about the time and place….his recollection must have been fuzzy. Have you ever seen the fake binoculars which are alcohol containers in disguise?  How about the old silver hip flask or leather pouch canteen?  I suppose these items are so dated and obsolete that generations have no knowledge of them.  They can’t possibly make a comeback, could they?  Students today could never be clever or ingenious when it comes to partying…
The president of the University of Minnesota had no real choice, he had to rule against alcohol sale in the new TCF stadium.  This ruling is in compliance with the collegiate on-campus standard.  Any other decision would result in privileged and underprivileged fans within restricted areas, a fairness issue amongst others.  Not a good idea to be a standout school in the conference allowing on campus stadium alcohol sales.  I say the students at the U of Minnesota owe a great big thank you to the president.  Pre-game parties are coming back big time!
Since when have college students let a little rule or regulation stand in the way?  Of course alcohol can be brought into the stadium in the classic way, that is, in the stomach.  The answer to the no alcohol rule is pre-game fraternity and other parties and tailgating.  Not bad options.  Oh, and don’t forget the flask under the fur coat on a cold day!  Or did that never happen?
